Asturias Surfing

The stair number 10

Around of the 60s it was the place of meeting to practise surfing, moves along the face of a breaking ocean waves or riding waves.

On this mythical stair I met to the first asturian surfers in the year 1967, some of these were swimming´s teachers and rescues in the beach.

The first contact with the surfing in Gijon was a cinerama film, They made a tent next to "Isabel la Católica" park. In this projection we could see the Hawaii´s beaches, the wood board and … the most important to me: a dog surfing with his owner. KAHUNA.

Surfing Asturias

The surfing of the 60s and 70s evolved slow, the board were bought out or to the foreign surfers that were stopping in the Asturias beaches.

The wetsuits were a luxury, only some lucky few ones had a new suit during the winters of these years. In the street “Marqués de Casa Valdés”, Gijon, Asturias there were a shop that was called “As Copino”, it had a board in the shop window. This red surf board was exposed one for of years.

Surf Asturias

In the 80s the first brands appeared with surfing fashion trends. Pukas was the first shop in Spain at the end of the 70.
One of the first shops in Gijón was “Tablas” that worked to the windsurfing, the polyvalent wetsuits were the first contact with the surfing world.

In the middle of the 80s “More surf” shop was making suits with japaneses´s neopreno.
Also I would like remember “Free bee” that made his own surfing board and nowadays is one artist of surfing.

Also in the 80s we celebrated the first Asturias surf championships.

Since 1986 to 1991 the disco called Tik organised six tests. The most important festival was in 1990. Big and selective waves for the PRO-AM category and the sponsor was disco Tik. From this festival nowdays are a lot of surfer moves along the face of a breaking ocean waves.

Nowadays Asturias surfing is more that riding waves. Surfing fashion trends is created here.
